Job Description

 

Report to:

·              Montgomery County Cultural Foundation Board of Directors

 

Supervise:

·              Staff and Volunteers

 

Compensation:

·              Part-time position (20 hours /week on average)

·              Determined on an annual basis

 

Benefits:

·              Vacation – 40 hours annually

·              Personal days – 20 hours annually

 

Qualifications:

·              Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred, in Museum Studies, History, Public History, Art History or related field.  Coursework in non-profit or business related fields a plus. 

               Professional experience comparable to above education considered.

 

Skills:

·              Strong management and leadership skills

·              Ability to do strategic planning and fundraising

·              Clear understanding of professional museum standards and willingness to adhere to those standards

·              Ability to plan and implement diverse types of educational programming

·              Ability to design and install museum exhibits

·              Ability to communication effectively.

Position Summary:

·              The Executive Director is responsible for managing the daily operations and for the educational and creative direction of the organization, collections, interpretations, exhibitions, acquisitions and donations; recommends policies and assures that approved policies are followed; plans and directs activities, including the maintenance and operation of the Rotary Jail Museum and Center for the Arts; plan and implement volunteer recruitment, training, and retention program; responsible for supervising and coordinating the work of the staff and volunteers; works with the board to plan and implement fundraising activities i.e. capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, and grant writing; serves as the primary spokesperson for the organization; complies with established professional museum standards.

 

 

 Administration Responsibilities:

·              Assure that the organization and its sites are appropriately insured and arrange for appropriate coverage of loaned materials.

·              Work with staff to plan and implement educational programming and coordinate outreach activities; develop and cultivate opportunities to raise the organization profile.

·              Develop and implement marketing plan for the organization.  Ensure an ongoing public presence for the organization through marketing, public speaking, and other public communications, i.e. newsletters, updates, web site, media releases.

·              Work with board of directors to recruit, interview, hire, and terminate staff

·              Serve as head of staff, providing oversight, direction, support and evaluation.

·              Refer research requests to the appropriate individual or organization to ensure that the requests are filled.

·              Plan and implement volunteer recruitment, training, and retention program.  Train and schedule volunteers and staff.

·              Coordinate with Board of Directors in their governance role.

·              Promote professional museum standards to the Board of Directors and staff; act as an advocate for the organization’s collections and facilities ensuring that policies and procedures conform to accepted professional museum standards and codes of ethics.

·              Provide leadership role in developing strategic plan and revising or reviewing the current plan and work with the Board of Directors and staff to establish overall direction and priorities for the organization.

·              Manage the organization and staff within the established policies and practices and pursuant to the approved mission and vision.

·              Serve as nonvoting member of all standing committees.

·              Serve as manager of the Turnkey Shop.  Handle ordering, paying sales tax, securing items for consignment sales and paying artists for sales.

 

Development/Finance Responsibilities:

·              Work with the Finance Committee to develop a yearly budget and monthly financial report; ensure that sound financial policies and controls are in place, and disburse funds appropriately.

·              Complete annual evaluations of staff and recommend appropriate financial remuneration.

·              Work with the Board of Directors and staff to establish and implement fundraising goals, encourage ongoing participation of Board members as donors and solicitors.

·              Help to identify and cultivate individual, foundation, and corporate donors and expand donor base; research and write grant proposals, develop annual solicitations, and other fundraising initiatives.

 

Curatorial Responsibilities:

·              Ensure the preservation and maintenance of the Rotary Jail Museum, Center for the Arts and the museum grounds.

·              Direct and oversee the acquisition of artifacts and archival materials in accordance with the approved Collections Management Policy.

·              Direct and oversee preservation, conservation, and interpretation of artifacts and archival materials in the permanent collections of the organization.

·              Initiate and administer policies and programs that benefit the collections.

·              Supervise housekeeping of the sites belonging to the organization.

·              Plan and install museum exhibits and develop yearly calendar for exhibits.

 

Other Responsibilities:

·              Schedule and lead tours as needed

·              Work in Gift Shop
